Really? Laguna again? : June 26-29, 2023

Laguna Meadow

Yes, really. We just couldn’t help ourselves. It’s close, convenient, beautiful, and has awesome mountain biking. It still amazes me that there are over three million people in San Diego County yet zero crowds up here midweek. It just seemed like a wonderful place to spend my birthday.

I keep forgetting to mention the old fart pass! I got it last year when I turned 62. It’s not just good for National Parks, it’s basically good for any national thing, like National Forest Campgrounds. Our site was $16 a night instead of $32.

We ran into two of the SD Trek Women’s MTB Team members. Amelia has known these elite riders for over a decade. That’s Rhonda on the left and Gretchen on the right.

We love trail art. A couple of the cattle guard crossings had sea shells hanging from the adjacent barbed wire. Such a San Diego thing!

This trip was a little different. While we were gone, members on both sides of our family were having health issues. You start thinking differently as you see yourself and others age. Questions run through your mind, like how many good years do you have left?

It feels like you are chasing time.

Be well

  1. Another great post! Congratulations on your retirements. I hope you find time to come back to Bend as I’d love to ride with you again. True about getting older and wondering how many years of mountain biking do I have left? Having a senior pass is a great deal too. I am camping now almost every weekend I can in my old sprinter van. Nothing for the millenials to covet but good enough for me and my dog.

    • I’m sure sooner or later we’ll get back up there again. I like the idea of meeting up on the road!

  2. Welcome to 63! Love the National Parks Pass – we got our last year too. Hugs to Amelia!!!

  3. Happy Belated Birthday Greg! Wow just think, I’ve known you since we became consciously aware of each other from our infant state in life. I was born in Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, and lived within the same neighborhood as you, was it DuPont Circle? When my family moved to Idaho in ‘69, we would soon be reunited within a year or two when your family also moved to idaho. The new kid in my class at Edgemont Elementary was announced by my teacher, Mrs. Evans, and the kid was You! In the years to come it was back and forth for both of us for awhile, from Rust Never Sleeps to trips back in forth to college in your classic red VW. And even though we haven’t seen each other for many moons, I still consider you a great friend, one of my originals I would say. There are a lot of memories in our lives some are independent, and some parallel our lives in and out of touch, but they are good ones! So once again, Happy Belated Birthday-and many more! Take care of Amy and yourself bro and live the dream!

  4. Happy belated birthday and love the old fart pass…I have one of those as well. Love that you guys are living life to the fullest!
