Monahans Sandhills State Park: March 19, 2024

Our first Texas State Park

To get to Monahans we drove through the Permian Basin, the highest producing oil field in the U.S. and certainly not the prettiest part of West Texas. It felt like the middle of nowhere, yet there were numerous signed turnoffs to the oil fields where you could see flames shooting out of tall pipes, which is called gas flaring. It’s the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction. On the main roads there were barracks set up for the workers to stay. There were also many R.V. parks for those workers that were lucky enough to have their own fifth wheels. They looked like storage lots because all the trailers were under RV carports.

Since being on the Texas-New Mexico border Amelia noticed that most of the vehicles were trucks. She was calling out, “Truck!” over and over until a random car would show up. On this day she started naming the trucks, “Ram! Chevy! Ford! GMC! Ford! Ford!” All were big trucks made in the U.S.A. We saw maybe two Tundras. We drove through sad little towns named Orla, Pecos, Pyote, and even a Barstow!

Nice front door view, literally right on the edge of the sand.

The day we arrived I had a 2:30pm appointment at this place. Oh boy, what a story I could tell…

While I was getting an adjustment, Amelia did a little walk on the dunes, or as they call it sandhills, and picked up all this trash. People never cease to disappoint.

I love old shuttered motel signs. This was on the east end of Monahans while returning from the chiropractor.

They were decent dunes, good for a one night stay.

A recent rain and wind left these formations.

We were treated to a hell of a sunset!

The next morning we got up early for a little sunrise yoga session.

The early birds were rewarded with an awesome sunrise.

Opal and the beautiful sky. Next stop Big Bend!

  1. Very descriptive! What a trippy drive, no? Did it Years back with my friend Stella. I remember seeing sign for Pecos and thinking about “Pecos Bill.” No idea what that legend is now, but the name stuck.

  2. Love all the pics and the motel sign is a good one! When I walk on my best in Rosarito, I usually take an empty trash bag with me….I hope the adjustment went well.
