Washoe Lake State Park: August 19 – 23, 2014

The noise of Laurel Mt Rd and the view of the condo complex across the street, Krystal Villa West, were getting to us so we decided to spend four nights at what we use to consider an overnight stop, Washoe Lake.  We knew during mid week the place would be empty and it had great Verizon reception so I could be accessible for work.

After the morning bike rides there is a lot of time to do nothing but relax. Relaxing doesn’t come natural to everyone, truth be told I’m still learning.

The mornings are quiet and calm. Right around noon when it gets warm the wind picks up and cools things down. The views are expansive. There are 49 campsites and only 5 were occupied. It’s the kind of place where a man can be alone with his thoughts.

One evening as we were taking our after dinner walk an old codger and his dog were doing the same. He asked us if we were on our way to Burning Man! Ha! That’s the best one I’ve heard in a long time. Mr. & Mrs. Fancy Pants cruising the Airstream to the Burning Man Festival.

Our first morning the quiet and calm was interrupted by the cackling of geese.

The relaxing highlight everyday was watching these barn swallow chicks get fed. Both parents were going back and forth all day long bringing food. Our chairs were underneath the canopy shelter. It was as if we weren’t even there. The chicks were squawking, eating, and shitting all day. The effort the parents took to feed their offspring was amazing.

There's actually one good riding spot in Carson City: Ash Canyon and we rode it three days in a row.

Ash Canyon again.

Suncloud sunglasses, the poor man’s Vuarnet from back in the day. These are the genuine article from the early 80’s, not some knockoff. I’m pretty sure my brother won them in a ski race. There’s nothing like looking at the world through rose colored glasses.

Give me my glasses back!

This is what an empty campground looks like.

An added plus, great tasting water from this pump.

My two girls. This is a dried up pond on the walk out to Washoe Lake. Washoe is really low, but not this bad.

Just like her mom, always trying to get my attention while I'm working.

Walker Burger in Walker, California. Supposedly this is where the animal control napped Sara because she was hanging out, begging for food from customers. We didn't dare stop. I was afraid someone would recognize her and try to claim her.

  1. Greg and Amelia — I see that you are in our backyard, so to speak, since we’re in Reno.  I would propose a get-together to meet you if our calendar wasn’t already so booked.  We have two engagements today/tonight and a medical appointment Monday morning and dinner that night.  Are you going to be in our area long or are you already on the move?

    Best, Helen Nolte (Bill’s mom)

    • Hi Helen!
So sorry we didn’t think to hook up with you while we were in Carson. We are already back in Mammoth. Next time we are in your neck of the woods we will be sure to contact you.
